In our Volume 18, Issue 3 of Astronomy Technology Today, Dr. Leon Palmer’s article “Video Collimation Using a Rigel Systems Aline, iPhone and iPad” investigated how to make a dynamic, affordable alternative for live video collimation using an iPhone or Android phone. The 2″ kit includes a phone holder (fits 2″ eyepiece focus tubes), a 2″ Rigel Systems Aline, reflective center target and two collimation ring transparencies priced at $34.95US.
The heart of the offerings is the Rigel Systems Aline telescope collimation eyepieces. When using the Aline, you see a bright white circle surrounding the image of your eye’s pupil, making it easier to center the primary and secondary mirrors, which is especially important for aligning rich field and fast Newtonian and Dobsonian telescopes. Simple in design, the Aline uses an ultra-reflective microprism retroreflector and the light gathered by your telescope to produce a bright image. A simple device to make a complicated subject like live video collimation quite simple.
